Why We Work?

Why do we lead, train, coach, mentor, or heal?

Daan Utsav, also called the Joy of Giving Week, is a week-long festival held in India from October 2–8. A celebration focused on giving, sharing, and spreading kindness, encouraging people to offer their time, money, resources, or skills to benefit others.

  • Daan Utsav is built on the belief that generosity transcends all boundaries.
  • We can join the festivities by donating, volunteering, raising awareness, collaborating with others, or contributing in-kind gifts — any random act of kindness.

Last evening, on my post-dinner walk, I saw two strays outside our apartment complex looking hungry. I chose to feed them! I fondly remember Sri Ratan Tata’s love for dogs and strays. How random acts of kindness will mean the world to other Souls.

I got reminders to make a difference based on my humble contributions to some good causes in the past.

That, along with other triggers, prompted me to think,

Why do we work? Why do we earn? What is our life purpose?

Last month, I was invited to visit Sai Gramam for some coaching & mentoring for their staff and students. I made plans to visit from 9th to 11th Oct last week.

Sai Gramam is 28 years old and does excellent service to humanity:

  • Over 5 Lac free dialysis is done in different parts of Kerala.
  • Over 4.0 Cr people served delicious & healthy food at Narayanalayam, their kitchen
  • Over 1,000 children were covered in accessible education, and an equal number grew up in their orphanage
  • Over 750 elderly people are taken care of in their old age homes
  • 310 houses for the homeless
  • Over 100 mentally challenged found a home
  • Over 1 Lac treated at Ayush centres
  • Water projects at 41 schools in remote Attappady, free training for women, computer training for tribal, and many more…

I got to spend three fulfilling days at Sai Gramam, coaching and mentoring the college students, staff, lecturers and others

At Manali, I pulled a chair facing the Himalayas and sat there with a cup of tea. Time stood still!

Here at TVM, I pulled this comfortable cane chair and sat there, without a cup of tea… just sat there…! Time stood still here too!!
