The making of the G.O.A.T.

Virat is still a work in progress in his journey to his full potential and to become the #GOAT in cricket. And it is unfolding in front of our eyes!
What does it take to become the best (the G.O.A.T)?
His celebration was so unlike the aggressive Virat:
‘Now, when he brought up his 28th Test century with a flicked single, Kohli celebrated very differently.’
- No punching in the air, no jumping. There was no swearing. He seemingly stopped doing that years ago. This time Virat unstrapped his helmet slowly (there is magic in everything slow, including slow food) and raised his bat to his dressing room with a smile.
When I ask aspiring coaches and leaders on their coach training & certification journey ‘how they felt’ about reaching a milestone, the answer is often, ‘R E L I E V E D!”
- Then he laid his helmet and gloves down and reached into his collar to extract the chain he wears around his neck. Having pulled this out, he kissed the wedding ring he hangs from it a la Frodo Baggins.
I thought it was a pendant from his Guru or an image of the Divine around his neck. But the wedding ring. Behind every successful wo/man… It is also the evolution of the relationship. It is the maturity of the person, the player. Relationships matter; we ignore them at our peril. Remember #RegalAt60?
Peace at home is essential, just as peace within. This is an integral part of his journey to the G.O.A.T. It takes an entire ecosystem to succeed…
- ‘In every way now, he’s less west Delhi and more western-beachfront Mumbai.’ And that is good news for Virat, his fans, the sport, and all other stakeholders. All have a role in his evolution as a player, GOAT or otherwise.
2+8 = 10, a perfect ten. The celebration was different.
@ShekharGupta This has to be the most understated century celebration by Virat Kohli. Case of when relief overwhelms joy. Also, vindication after the unfortunate and vile “cut Kohli to size” campaign by the power-that-be at #BCCI then.
Virat’s interaction with his coach (The Wall, one of the greatest ever) is a masterclass: Fitness, Attitude, and Inner Game.
- My defense is my strength — play to your strength
- Batting Fitness: I can play 4–5 sessions—the power of fitness and preparation matters. It has been a constant process for 7/8 years; I did it daily. The power of habit
Tim Ferriss speaks of his ability to outwork anyone.
- You can’t play all the time in the same way. Play to the situation. Be aware. Conditions matter, just as “ * conditions apply.”
Be like water, my friend — Bruce Lee
- I don’t want to play a bad shot and get out. I want to play for the team. “That is what being a team player is!” #RahulDravid
- “His lifestyle inspires everyone in the team (dressing room),” #Coach.
- “Not scoring a hundred — has it been hard?”. It has been hard for all his die-hard fans… Virat allowed the pressure to grow on him to some extent to it. Takes pride in performing for the team. — Stress has some utility too. Or is it about converting the pressure to inspiration?
